Production at Two New Coal Mines to Begin in January 2024 Production from Captive and Commercial Coal Mines Reaches 14.30 MT in January

Achievement of a 27% Increase in Coal Dispatch Posted by PIB Delhi at 2:56 PM on February 1, 2024. As of January 2024, there are 53 coal mines in operation, up from 51 with a combined PRC of 7.5 million tonne (MT) due to the opening of two new mines. Six coal mines began production in 2023; as of  March 31st, 2023, there were 47 operating captive and commercial mines. There are 53 mines total, of which 33 are for captive power consumption, 12 for captive consumption for the Non-Regulated Sector, and 8 for the selling of coal for a profit. January 2024 saw a total of 14.30 MT of coal produced from captive and commercial mines, a 29% increase from 11.06 MT in the same month the year before. The total amount of coal dispatched was 12.86 MT, up 27% from 10.12 MT in January 2023.
 
Over the ten months of the current fiscal year, from April 1 to January 31, 2024, coal production and dispatch from captive and commercial coal blocks increased significantly to approximately 112 MT and 116 MT, respectively. This represents a year-over-year growth of approximately 26% and 31% respectively from the same period of FY 2022-2. 116.55 MT of coal were produced overall in FY2022-23 from captive and commercial mines.  During the first two weeks of February 2024,  coal production will surpass previous records and is expected to reach an all-time high. In order to significantly enhance production and dispatch, satisfy the nation's growing energy demand, and realize the aim of Atma Nirbhar Bharat, the Ministry of Coal is taking all necessary actions to operationalize coal blocks within deadlines.
